Gerson Eguiguren

BIOGRAPHY

Gerson is a young musician, singer and violist/violinist born in Quito, Ecuador. His early musical studies were conducted at the National Conservatory of Music of Ecuador from six years of age, a place where he developed his knowledge of classical piano, clarinet and saxophone. Additionally, at this institution he was part of the Children's Choir who participated in several competitions at national and international levels getting the highest awards. At 11 years of age he was invited to be soloist of the "Polyphonic Children’s Choir" of the OPAM with whom he traveled to Europe to represent Ecuador in the "Olympics Choir Competition, Bremen -Germany" (2004-2005), receiving the third place award. After this, Gerson became one of the most important singers for the traditional Latin American folklore in Quito. He became lead singer and performer for notable musicians such as Mauricio Noboa, Luis Eguiguren and Dúo Selah. After quickly picking up the viola, he became first stand of the Chamber Orchestra named “Casa de la Musica” which was conducted by Dr. Gustavo Lovato. Gerson also became the violist for the successful string quartet “Quartet Quito” as well as lead singer and violist for the bands “The Cairo Band” and “Uma Coisa de Nove” which performed music from all over the world in Ecuador’s most prestigious theaters and venues. Gerson was also called to sing for the inauguration Ecuador’s previous president, Rafael Correa (in 2013) and was accompanied by the four big Ecuadorian Symphonic Orchestras, which were combined for the event; he also was invited to sing at the welcoming of Ecuador’s present-day president, Lenin Moreno, to Boston this year (2018).

At the young age of 17 he started teaching music lessons at the “Franz List Conservatory” and “Fretless Music Academy” where he created the educational program for kids called “Pintando con la Música” (“Painting with Music”). This program aims to involve kids in the music world through art by helping them develop physical and creative skills and passion for the music studies.

Gerson first began his college studies in 2011 at the “Universidad de los Hemisferios” in Quito, where he reinforced his knowledge of classical music. Later he continued his studies at the Universidad San Francisco de Quito’s College of Music (COM) in 2012, he received an extensive education in contemporary music with a specialized focus on jazz, Brazilian music, and vocal improvisation (scat). Here Gerson also began his studies in violin, viola and orchestra. After this Gerson auditioned and got accepted to continue his studies in the United States at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts where he received a double major Degree in Performance and Professional Music in August 2017 with a full scholarship between the Berklee and the Ecuadorian Government.

Gerson has performed internationally as a singer, violist and violinist at major venues alongside the most recognized figures in the art world in countries such as Ecuador, Colombia, Mexico, United States, Greece, Germany, Slovenia, Russia, Turkey and France. These experiences have given Gerson a very important background in performing different musical styles such as the Latin American, Indian, Arabic, jazz, Brazilian, Classic, and world music in general.

While he lived in Boston (2014 – 2018) Gerson has worked with an impressive list of world-renowned artists, Grammy and Latin Grammy award winners. He performed with Susana Baca, Joyce Moreno, Milton Nascimento, Pablo Ziegler, Jacob Collier,  Bill Whelan, A. R. Rahman, Patrick Doyle, Beyoncé’s First Band, Tigran Hamasyan, Toninho Horta, Peter Eldridge, Kenny Werner’s last album, “Somewhere”, Maysaa Karaa. Gerson’s performances can be found on YouTube and boast more than 20,000,000 views. We can keep mentioning important artist like Paquito D’Rivera, Oscar Stagnaro, Richard Clayderman, Nahuel Pennisi, Jorge Drexler, Kaki King, to name most of them.

 

During Gerson’s time in Boston, he has performed in world-renowned venues like Boston Symphony Hall, Berklee Performance Center, Kresge Auditorium at MIT and has also participated in multiple recordings for Berklee Alumni, Berklee’s YouTube channel and for numerous artists, both as a singer and viola/violin player. Gerson was Principal Viola of the World Strings Orchestra conducted by Eugene Friesen since 2015 until 2018, as well as Principal Viola of the Harry Potter Soundtrack Orchestra.

 

Gerson is the founder and artistic director of the new Vocal Acapella Quartet “MuZù”, a group that brings workshops focused on improvisation for singers and spontaneous composition as they perform around the world. In 2016 Gerson presented the show called “Berklee for Ecuador and Japan” Concert that had more than 50 musicians from all over the world including the participation of “Woman of the World” performing to create disaster relief awareness and to collect funds to help Ecuador and Japan after the earthquakes.

 

 

Since October 2017, Gerson worked as a performer for multiple events, with big orchestras and recordings at the most important venues and recording studios in Boston. Gerson also is the most important Ecuadorian musician for the Ecuadorian community in New England; he performed traditional music from his country at a variety of Ecuadorian events while working closely with the consulate, Beatriz Almeida.

Now in Ecuador since 2019, Gerson is the cofounder and vice-president of the Foundation “Fundación Fretless” an organisation that provides cultures diffusion in Ecuador, bringing artists from all over the world to perform, lead clinics and provide opportunities for people with limited resources. He is also finishing an album of Ecuadorian music with world fusion arrangements; his purpose is to make Ecuador an important country for music in the world. He beliefs the music, the arrangements and strategies he is putting on this album would make it very successful and would make an important impact on Ecuadorians Culture and how the world would get to now about the country and the culture.
